Aenean Familiars
Familiars are the animal companions of wizards. They confer aspects of their own senses to the wizard and act as scouts, spies, and guardians. Through the mystical bond shared with the wizard, the familiar gains an exceptionally long lifespan (it lives until the wizard dies). They are normally small animals, but a few animals as large as a horse have been known to be familiars. In this campaign, the wizard casting the find familiar spell can choose the type of animal which will answer the summons (if successful, and the choice is up to the DM’s approval). Material components for the spell will vary depending on the type of companion desired, but will still cost at least 1000 gold dragons.
Examples of familiars (depends on the region!):
When first summoned, each familiar has an intelligence of 2-3. Every other time the wizard gains a level, the familiar will gain one point of intelligence. It’s possible for an 18th level wizard’s familiar to have an intelligence of 10-11 (if he had the familiar since 1st level). A few very rare familiars have even learned to speak humanoid languages!
