The Schools of Magic & Specialist Wizards
Most wizard spells are categorized into one of eight "schools" of magic based on what effects they create and how they create those effects. There is a ninth school of magic, lesser divination, which has two spells known and useable by all wizards. The arrangement of opposing schools has been changed from the Player's Handbook.Mages are able to use spells from all of the schools of magic with no penalty. Mages can be of almost any race. Specialist wizards remain as they are in the Player's Handbook, except where noted below and elsewhere on this site. A specialist gains bonuses from his specialization. He can automatically learn spells from his own school no matter his intelligence (and can learn an unlimited number of such spells). Researching new spells from within his school is also automatically successful. A specialist suffers in other areas of magic due to his devotion to a single type of spells. The wizard cannot learn or use magics from the school opposite his. He suffers a -30% chance to learn spells from the schools on either side of his opposition school. He suffers a -15% chance to learn spells from all other schools. Player Character specialists can come from any of the races listed with each type.
