Rules Addition: Skill Points

Revised 11/23/2002

PCs and NPCs in Aenea have the ability to improve upon their various skills as they gain experience. This improvement is shown in the form of skill points, earned and applied to different proficiencies.

Skill points are a generic group of points earned and used by both PCs and NPCs to improve their use of various skills. Each of these points can be applied to a single weapon or non-weapon proficiency or spell of the character's choosing, and that point will permanently raise the character's chance of success when using that skill.

At first level, each PC starts with 4 total skill points, which they can apply to either weapon proficiencies, non-weapon proficiencies, spells, or a combination of these. Each time the character gains a level in any class, he or she gains one skill point to add to their skills. Multi-class characters gain a point with each class level, as do dual class characters.

Because skills are based greatly on mental prowess, certain characters may gain more skill points than others after first level. Those characters with either Intelligence or Wisdom (or both) of 16 or higher gain 1/2 extra skill point per level. This reflects their ability to learn faster and apply their experiences to improving their skills. These 1/2 skill points cannot be used until another matching 1/2 point is gained.

While skill points may be applied to any skill, there are limitations. First, each skill can only receive up to 5 skill points. Second, only warriors may place more than half of their points on weapon proficiencies, due to their battle prowess compared to other classes. The other points can be applied to any other types of skills.

When a skill point is applied to a proficiency, skill, or spell, the character gains a +1 (or +5%) bonus to any success rolls when using that skill:
• If applied to a weapon proficiency, the character gains a +1 to hit (but not to damage) with that exact type of weapon.
• If applied to a non-weapon proficiency, he or she gains a +1 (or +5%) bonus to his or her chance of success.
• If applied to a thief skill, he or she gains a +5% bonus to his or her chance of success.
• If applied to a spell, the character can cast that particular spell with a better chance of success. This translates to a -1 penalty to the target's saving throw against that particular spell.
