Araneae's Spider Sigil
Conjuration (Creation) [Force]
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: Touched book or written work
Duration: Permanent or until discharged; until released or 1d4 days + 1 day/level
Saving Throw: Reflex negates
Spell Resistance: No

This spell creates a small symbol that appears as part of the target of the spell. When this symbol is read, a 6 inch black spider appears and attempts to bite the nearest living creature (but does not attack the caster). The victim is entitled to a Reflex save to avoid the bite, and if successful, the spider vanishes with a loud hiss and a puff of black smoke. If the victim fails the save, he is surrounded by a shimmering grey field of force and is held in stasis until released, either by the caster or when 1d4 days +1 day per caster level have elapsed.

While trapped in the effects of the spell, the victim does not age, breathe, grow hungry, sleep, or regain spells. He is preserved in a state of suspended animation, unaware of his surroundings or the passage of time. He can be damaged by outside forces (and perhaps killed), since the spell provides no protection against physical injury. If reduced to -1 to -9 hit points in this way, he does not lose hit points or stabilize until the spell ends.

The hidden symbol created by this spell cannot be detected by normal observation. A detect magic spell reveals only that the entire book or text is magical. A dispel magic can remove the sigil, and an erase destroys the entire page of text the sigil is on. This spell will work in conjunction with other spells that hide or garble text.

Material Components: 500 gp worth of crushed onyx and a dried spider.
