The subject of this spell is bound in place, helpless, by the instant formation of a dozen magical chains forged of darkness. He or she is aware and breathes normally, but cannot take any physical actions, even speech (the chains cover and restrain any part of the subject that might be able to move). The subject can, however, execute purely mental actions (such as casting a spell with no components). At the end of the duration, the chains fade away.

A winged creature who is bound cannot flap its wings and falls. A swimmer can't swim and will float to the surface. The chains can be destoyed before the end of the spell by a spell of 5th level or higher with the [Light] descriptor, but the immobile subject suffers the same amount of damage without benefit of any sort of saving throw.
