Master Focus

A master focus is a type of magical item useful only to the type of spellcaster that created it. It serves as a focus for the caster's spells and allows the spellcaster to cast many spells without the use of material components. While a master focus can be made into any object that can be held in hand, for wizards it is usually crafted as a staff, and for clerics and druids it is usually a holy symbol dedicated to their deity. An individual master focus can only be used by someone of the same class (and faith, in the cast of clerics and druids) as the creator.

The only real function of a master focus is to allow a spellcaster to cast spells without the use of material components or a different focus for each spell. Each master focus is attuned to a specific class (and possibly faith) and spell level. A master focus of any level includes all of the functions of the ones of lower level.

If a master focus is to be used by a spellcaster other than the one that created it, it must be attuned to a spellcaster before it can be used. This entails a mystical ritual (known only to those with the Craft Master Focus feat) which takes 1 day per level of the master focus and costs the attuned spellcaster 500 XP. A newly created master focus is already attuned to the spellcaster that crafted it. A master focus must be held in the spellcaster's hand to be used.

A master focus can be enchanted with other powers and abilities (using other item creation feats), but those addition powers will cost twice the normal price due to the secondary nature of those enchantments.

A spellcaster can further enchant his master focus, raising it to a higher level. Doing so costs the difference between the new and old, just as if further enchanting any other magical item, and requires the Craft Master Focus feat. A spellcaster can only create a master focus up to the highest level spells he can cast (for example, a 5th level wizard can only craft one up to master focus III, while a 5th level sorcerer can only create a master focus II).
