Homeroom News Classroom Behavior Report: It appears that after more than half a school year, many students are having trouble adjusting to the classroom environment where they are expected to show respect to everyone around them. There has been an increase in behaviors such as name-calling, plus open disrespect for school staff and for the learning environment of others. Classroom Policies/Procedures/Expectations: Materials/Supplies: Students are expected to bring a pencil, their Agenda, notebook, and class-specific books/homework to the classroom every day. Dull pencils can be traded in to get a sharpened pencil during class time. P.A.T. (Preferred Activity Time): This is time the class earns for positive behavior and loses for unwanted behavior. It is used at the end of the week for fun activities in the classroom and for classroom parties (such as holiday parties). PAT is earned/lost in several ways for homeroom: 1. Entering the classroom at the start of the day and between class periods: - if quiet and ready to go within 1 minute, class gains 3 minutes - it not quiet and ready to go within 2 minutes, class loses 3 minutes 2. Quieting down when the teacher gives one of three known signals: - if quiet within 10 seconds, class gains 1 minute - it not quiet within 10 seconds, class loses 2 minutes PAT is earned/lost in several ways for each Science/Social Studies period: 1. Entering the classroom at the start of the class period: - if quiet and ready to go within 1 minute, class gains 3 minutes - it not quiet and ready to go within 2 minutes, class loses 3 minutes 2. Quieting down when the teacher gives one of three known signals: - if quiet within 10 seconds, class gains 1 minute - it not quiet within 10 seconds, class loses 2 minutes 3. Begin prepared for class: - if all students have required materials (typically writing instrument, notebood, and Agenda), class gains 5 minutes - if noone leaves to use the restroom for class period (they have lots of time before/after class), class gains 3 minutes Entering the Classroom: For Homeroom: Students are expected to enter the classroom in an orderly manner and quickly sit at their desks while quietly putting away their materials from home or previous classes. Students have 1 minute to be sitting quietly and waiting for directions or, if there is work to be started (such as a journal entry or D.O.L.) they should be quietly working. For Science or Social Studies: Students are expected to enter the classroom in an orderly manner, and quickly sit at their desks. Students will have 1 minute to end up waiting quietly for directions with their materials out on their desks. Talking in Class: #1: Students are expected to actively listen when the teacher is giving instruction. This means students are not talking with others, playing with toys (or glue), writing notes to others, or disrupting the learning of other students. This also means students are watching the teacher, taking notes, and just generally paying attention. #2: When instructed to "work on their own" or "work quietly", students are supposed to put effort into the current task without talking to those around them or across the room. #3: If a student has a question about the current class topic, the student just has to raise his/her hand and wait to be called on. #4: A brief break in the teacher speaking (for such matters as diverse as opening a book or answering the classroom phone) does not mean it is time for students to start talking as if they were in the lunchroom or at recess. Restroom Use: Students are expected to use the time before/after Science or Social Studies to use the restroom. Returning from the restrooms disrupts class for everyone else. Sudden emergencies are understandable. Food & Drink: In Room 35, students are allowed to drink water in class. Just water, not Gatorade, Powerade, soda, etc. Eating is allowed only at snack time in homeroom (10:30-10:45 am). Healthier snacks are encouraged...if any of the 1st three ingredients are "sugar" or "corn syrup" (or "high fructose corn syrup", "fructose", or "dextrose"), that snack should stay at home. The students have known this since the start of the school year. Students bring their own snacks. Respect for Others: Students are expected to show respect for others, be it other students or school staff. Parents may want to share the "golden rule" in regards to this topic. |
